Note all the names for types of shading. No shading is probably pretty obvious. Note how the harsher lines create a more comic-y style. Hard cell shading is the second fastest way to shade anything, and is my go-to for my shaded commissions. Next is soft shading. However, note that for any hard shadows shadows created by two objects close to each otherI used hard cell shading. The two types of shading differentiate different types of shadows.
The soft kind is caused simply by being further from the light source while the hard kind is caused by another object getting in the way of the light. I combine all kinds of shading for all of my finished, detailed pieces.
In this piece, I first went over both figures with a large soft brush to roughly mark where I want shadows to exist. Then, I went in with a hard brush and carved out major shadows. After that, I added a second layer and darkened the insides of a few of the shadows. Next, I softened the shadows with a large, soft eraser and a large soft brush. If you look closely, some feathers are shaded hard while the main body of the wings is shaded soft. Rendering a piece can take as long as, if not longer, than the coloring process. Rendering and lineart are the two most time consuming parts of my artistic process, but putting in extra effort for these two parts makes the drawing appear that much more polished. Please stay tuned for more tips posts in the future!After quite a few months, I'm finally back with another fanart! Like many other participants of the challenge, I've decided to draw literal sweets as opposed to other interpretations of the challenge's theme.
I actually really didn't know who to draw at first until I stumbled upon some Your Lie in April feels on my Instagram feed. I was mainly inspired by Kuvshinov Ilya's illustrations of Kaori.
I just came across those old drawings while scrolling through Instagram. I just really liked the composition so I tried to integrate it into my drawing. Basically splitting the canvas with a diagonal and making one side simpler and the other side more complex. I didn't redraw any already existing illustration, nor did I copy a pose. Due to an injury, I couldn't draw for a few months, so I had to make two layers of sketches before I started lining.
I decided to change the direction of the hair from the sketch to the lineart, because I didn't like the motion. So, before doing anything else after lining, I made a layer of trial colours. Basically, I tried coordinating the colours as much as possible to make sure that the colours would compliment each other.
Then, I filled in the base colours. Since the coffee beans near her head were covering too much of her hair, I decided to remove them. I started by shading the eyes. I tried something different this time, something a bit more realistic. I started by shading the eyelashes and adding some highlights. Next, I shaded I shaded her sclera with multiple layers, I tried to sort of make the darkest shading of her sclera match the colour of her eyelashes to give a smoother effect.
Finally, I shaded her irises and added in her pupils. I just added random darker colours of shading, a few of strokes here, a bit of airbrush there, until I was satisfied. I then tried to highlight her irises the way I would highlight a sphere.

Not in a way that would look unnatural. I also added a bit of purple over the lights on a layer set to 'lumi and shade'. I added some orange to her mouth, made some red strokes for texture and finished it off with a bold highlight. For her skin, I honestly really struggled to make it look as realistic as possible. I used 4 different layers of different shading, one layer of blush and one layer of highlight. I only did 2 layers of shading for her hair, but I tried to make her hair look slightly stringier as opposed to my usual shading that makes the hair look clumped.
I added highlight and and extra strands with flat colours and a bold brush. I also airbrushed some of her skin tone onto her hair to make the components blend a bit better. I also shaded her socks with two layers and highlighted with one. I made sure to make her shin visible with the shading. Before I started shading her shirt, I airbrushed some on her skin tone onto her collar to make the two components blend better.
Then, I did my usual two layers of shading, sometimes using a bolder brush for the folds and sometimes using airbrush for gradients.This is the portrait that we have today, I did a quick portrait sketch of Lyris. Some of these tips may seem subjective at times, but these tips are my personal favorites from over the years that I use to make my portraits look awesome. So the way I sketched this, I thought about grouping my shapes and I kept that in mind.
Let me show you some real-life examples of portraits being broken down. For this one right here we have the sweater, we have her face, and then we have the hair. And if you want to paint this you can easily dissect each area. For this one, we have this long shape here, we have the head, and then the components. We have the head, we have the earring, we have the sliver of texture, and the coat. And then when you have your basic shapes, you go deeper into the shadow shapes.
And this is the perfect time to bring out the third essential tip: Yeah, this is a personal favorite tip of mine that I love using and I learned this from observing fashion makeup. I noticed when I add a nice blush to my character it brings out a really natural beautiful glow and so we rinse right here- Ooohoohoo! Look at that! Some blush here, and then some blush tones under the eyes- Nice! Look at that I just use the blush tone and blended some of these edges.

In previous releases, photoshop used the center point to distribute objects. If your objects are different sizes, the space between the objects would not be the same. The Best Types Of Makeup Brushes For Nailing That Highlight
But what are the best types of makeup brushes for applying highlighter? Depending on the type of highlighter you choose, and the intensity that you desire, the right brush or sponge! Whether you prefer a cream, powder or liquid highlighter, and whether you want a glow that can be seen from spaceor a barely-there shine, it's almost more about how you choose to apply your illuminator than what type you pick.
Although if you want that intense, long-lasting highlight, try layering a powder over a liquid or cream. And while there are some really great brushes out there made especially to perfect that glow, there are also some multitaskers that work just as well.
Because highlighter doesn't have to be as precise as, say, a blush or contour, there's free rein with how to apply it. So whether that means selecting a blush brush, eyeshadow brush, or even just using your fingers, it's relatively simple to get your glow on.
But if you're looking for the best way to achieve a certain effect, here are five types of makeup brushes that will help you totally nail that highlight. If you tend to be a little heavy-handed, or just want a sheerer application of a powder highlight, a fan brush is the way to go.
These brushes pick up less product, making it easier to start small and build up intensity rather than depositing too much highlight at once. If you're not afraid of that glow though, brushes made specifically for highlighter or smaller blush brushes, will help deposit a little more shine upon first application. If you want a really concentrated highlight, or want to more easily highlight smaller areas like the nose or cupid's bow, try an eyeshadow blending brush.
The smaller shape will help with those hard-to-reach places while also depositing more product. Stippling brushes are great for powder, liquid, or cream highlighters. And it will give you a different application strength depending on the formula.
For powders, a stippling brush will offer a sheerer application because the bristles won't pick up as much product as some other brush types. However, when using a liquid or cream highlight, a synthetic stippling brush will give a medium to intense application due to its ability to easily blend without absorbing the product.
If you still prefer a really light glow regardless of whether you choose a liquid, cream, or powder highlight, a makeup sponge is the way to go. These aren't able to pick up as much powder product, and any liquid or cream will be slightly absorbed during use. So while it will give you a flawlessly blended highlight, it may take more layers to build up a brighter luminosity.
